Changes to student support for both new and continuing students in session 2008-2009

Change in entitlement to the Young Students' Bursary

We will be extending the eligibility to the Young Students' Bursary to include:

  • single parents under 25 who have a dependant child of any age. Also, we will no longer take into account the parents' income to assess the amount of bursary due.

  • students under 25 who are married, in a civil partnership or live with a partner, who have a dependant child of any age. We will use the income of the husband, wife, civil partner or partner to assess the amount of bursary due.

You must supply a copy of a birth certificate with your first application.

Students who are married, in a civil partnership or live with a partner, who do not have a dependant child, are not eligible to apply for the bursary.

Changes to income assessment

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Fiona Hyslop MSP, has announced changes to the way we use income to calculate how much support students are entitled to.  These will come into effect  for both new and continuing students from academic session 2008-2009.

The changes are the result of a recent review aimed at modernising the current method of income assessment which has remained unchanged for many years and no longer reflects present day patterns of living.  Accordingly, amongst other things, we will now take account of a cohabiting partner’s income in the same way that we currently take account of a spouse or civil partner’s income.
